A long time favourite decorating style here in Australia, the coastal styling trend isn’t likely to disappear any time soon. With it’s fresh, clean look and reliance on natural tones and textures it can work in a huge variety of spaces – whether you live in a gorgeous beachside suburb or not.
Creating a coastal style usually begins with a predominantly white space and neutral toned floors, often wood or wood look for their visual warmth and natural texture. Natural wood furniture in various tones, rattan, baskets, linen sofas, indoor plants and natural decor items such as crystals, sea shells and drift wood all work to flesh out a coastal inspired space. Think relaxed squishy sofas, lots of natural light, plenty of visual texture and natural elements. Nothing should be too “perfect”, however considerate placement of decor items and a “less is more” approach works best.
Working from the ground up; a beautiful jute rug, or neutral toned wool option work for neutral coastal styling, or if colour is going to be added in cushions, throws and decor items. Or if it’s a more bold coastal look, a polypropylene option with some blue tones can work nicely.
