Does the thought of introducing colour into your home overwhelm you? Does the very thought leave you sweating? Or perhaps you’re just not sure of what works with what? Whatever your concern, let us help you take the anxiety out of colouring your world by sharing a few simple colour styling tricks.
Colour can be a big commitment depending on how you decide to inject it into your home. This is why people often shy away from bright, bold colours and patterns and rather stick to softer more muted monochromatic tones. If you are prepared to live a little, our best advice is to start small.
Colour is definitely personal. So when it comes to selecting the right colour/s consider what resonates with you. If you’re wanting to create a tranquil space opt for soft, calming colours; on the other hand if you want to spark life and energy into your space lean towards bright and bold colours.
Choose your colours and stick with them throughout. Any interior designer or stylist will know the 60 / 30 / 10 rule. So what does this mean? 60% off the room will comprise your chosen primary colour. This should generally be a lighter neutral tone. 30% of the room should be decorated in a second, complementary colour. Finally select a third tone to accent the final 10% of the space. Usually this third colour should create contrast between the first two colours and sit opposite on the colour wheel, for example navy with terracotta.
With all this said, where should I add colour we hear you ask? The easiest and most effective ways to introduce colour into your home are, paint a feature wall, throw in some bright/ bold accent cushions, invest in a colourful piece of artwork, bring the outdoors in with some beautiful greenery and finally unroll some colour underfoot!
