This month we had the pleasure of catching up with the lovely Bek Blackburn of Cinder Design Co. Bek is an Interior Designer, Colour Consultant and Kitchen Designer – with an ACFA Industry Award nomination under her belt. Her work is a stunning compilation of colour, texture, pattern and balance with all of her work creating inviting spaces that will stand the test of time – no trend decorating here. Bek clearly understands how to design for a client’s personality and lifestyle. Pop on over to her instagram @cinder.design.co for some gorgeous interior inspiration. Here’s what Bek had to say to us:
My style is:
Definitely don’t have a specific style, something that is not too stuck in a trend. I really love a dark, calm and moody space elevated with colour!
I find inspiration:
Always in colour palettes from nature, everything you could ever want is already outside! I also find inspo for individual projects within the client’s personality, hobbies and interests! That’s how you make a space tailored to the clients!
I use colour to:
Elevate, bring warmth and depth to a space, I love how colour can make you feel so different!
Form or Function:
Both are equally as important to each other. There is no point having something visually amazing if on a day to day basis it’s not going to work for the client. This is the juggling act of a designer, and sometimes compromise is needed, but ultimately we strive for a fair balance of both!
Styling advice I live by:
If you have fallen in love with a particular item for a space, don’t compromise on it! You will live to regret the alternative purchase. If you need to save money for another 6 months do that! It will be worth it in the end.
Top home styling tips:
No matter what your taste or style, consistency is key. Put together a Pinterest board for the space (this doesn’t just have to be interior shots, but visual inspiration) and then when you are shopping, refer back to your board and ask yourself “does this fit the overall feel of this board”. This is a good way to keep yourself on track along the way, and remind yourself of what you’re working towards as your end goal.
Top tips for buying the perfect rug:
No matter what your style, make sure you are getting the right size rug for your space! Don’t compromise on going smaller to save a buck. A nifty trick if you aren’t sure is to mark the rug dimensions out on the floor with painters tape to know it’s going to work.
What is your go to Six Fourteen Rug?:
I love transitional rugs at the moment, their subtle patterns and colours can be great for tying a colour palette in a room together, but also work wonders if you have a young family to hide the inevitable marks that will happen.
