This month for Style Files, we had the pleasure of a “chat” with the lovely Michelle Canny of Michelle Canny Interiors. Michelle is “an interiors obsessed decorator and stylist” with two gorgeous little boys. Now based in the seaside town of Nelson Bay, she’s a Melbourne girl at heart who loves her coffee and some quiet time at the beach…..when those cheeky monkeys give her a moment 😉
A scroll through Michelle’s insta feed is like a coffee with your bestie in their gorgeously decorated home. Style and growth inspiration all rolled up in one.
My style is:
I like a lot of different styles but I would say I’m drawn to an eclectic coastal kind of style. I love textured materials such as timber, rattan and linen and I like to combine vintage pieces of furniture and decor with newer ones.
I find inspiration:
In nature. I love the beach and outdoors as it provides me with a lot of colour and texture inspiration.
I use colour to:
Enhance a space and add interest to an interior.
Form or Function. Why?:
Function. I believe that an interior should be practical and suit the needs and lifestyle of the occupant but functionality doesn’t mean a space has to be boring.
Styling advice I live by:
Less is more. You don’t have to have everything you own on display.
Top home styling tips:
Before styling a space it helps to know your interior style so you can create a cohesive look.
To create interest in a space layer up items of different heights, shapes and textures.
When in doubt, plants are the perfect accessory to any interior.
Top tips for buying the perfect rug:
Think about where the rug is going to be used as this will determine the type of rug material you choose.
For example if it’s to be featured in a high traffic area, choose a rug that is going to be the most durable such as wool.
What is your go to Six Fourteen Rug?:
There are so many to choose from but I am a big fan of the Hobart Ivory chunky wool rug.

NB: The incredibly popular Hobart Ivory rug is currently due back in mid October. If you are super keen please get in touch so that we can double check stock levels for you.
