Welcome to winter, friends! What better time to chat to one of our Southern most design friends, the gorgeous Amy Enslin of Matilda Interiors. Amy is a Hobart based interior designer, who in her previous life was a physiotherapist and also holds a Bachelor of Music! Amy started her design studio Matilda Interiors about 6 months ago and hasn’t looked back since. Her insta feed is full of stunning images and great tips, tricks and info about design and how you can incorporate different features into your own home. Here’s what Amy had to share with us about rugs and styling:
My style is:
I love creating spaces that support wellbeing, mixing contemporary elements with a traditional influence. I am drawn to calming, muted colour palettes, loads of texture and always a little bit of black for contrast and depth. To put a label on it, I think Japandi would be the closest.
I find inspiration:
Firstly in nature. I am lucky enough to live in a gorgeous corner of the world (Tasmania) and love unplugging from technology on a regular basis to refresh my mind and spirit. I also love visiting beautifully designed accommodation. My poor husband is not allowed to unload our luggage until I have inspected, soaked in and photographed every corner!
I use colour to:
Tell a story, and influence how someone experiences a space. Colour is such a strong element of design and also very subjective. This explains why choosing the perfect colour can feel like such a daunting task!
Form or Function. Why?:
Function first for me. I promote sustainable purchases that suit a person’s lifestyle at that point in time. Luckily functional pieces can also be incredibly beautiful, the best of both worlds!
Styling advice I live by:
Following the wise advice of Marie-Kondo, does it spark joy? You can never go wrong with a home full of joyous decor! And to follow that, less is always more.
Top home styling tips:
Declutter first. Sometimes all you need is to rearrange items you already have, it can have an instant and satisfying impact! A layered room is a cosy one, invest in a rug and soft furnishings to help a room feel more inviting. Well chosen lighting (floor lamps, pendant lights) can give a room real wow factor.
Top tips for buying the perfect rug:
Narrow down your options first by identifying your needs and wants. Where is it going and how durable does it need to be? Think of size, shape, material and your budget. This will help reduce overwhelm and increase your chances of finding the perfect option! Generous rug sizes make a room feel more spacious and grounded, so if you can, go a size up!
What is your go to Six Fourteen Rug?:
I love the Kiama Wool Jute rug in grey. I have recently specified this for a client and cannot wait to see how it looks in their space! The combination of natural, resilient materials and a neutral warm grey colour is so versatile for a variety of spaces and styles.
